How a leasing company ventured into the hydrogen market

Best Practice: Collaboration with Würth Leasing

Initial Situation

It all started with my call in 2024. Würth Leasing, a subsidiary of the global market leader Würth, was already an established company in the traditional leasing business: machines, systems, vehicles – clear, calculable, standardized. But hydrogen? For many, it was too complex a field. In the first conversation, the answer was: "We can't do anything with that." A few months later, the call came back – and with it, a game-changer moment for both sides: The interest was there, and the door to the hydrogen market was to be opened.

Challenge

Leasing is routine business – but hydrogen is not standard. New technologies and process chains, unknown risks, lack of experience. Anyone who gets involved here needs not only capital, but courage, knowledge and strong partners.

My Contribution

I started a Product-Market Fit analysis to understand what major levers financing has in the hydrogen ecosystem.
Together with the Würth Leasing team, I have:
  1. Knowledge and insights into the specifics of the hydrogen market conveyed
  2. first anchor customers identified
  3. decision‒makers specifically linked and initial discussions accompanied

Result

Today, Würth Leasing is one of the first financiers to actively support hydrogen projects in Germany.The credit department can now "write hydrogen", the first financings have been set up - and the industry knows: Würth Leasing is an agile and reliable implementation partner. Thus, an initial skeptical rejection turned into a cooperation that has made the company a relevant player in a highly interesting growth market.
